Session 2: Driving Instruction with Assessment

For today's session we will look at how technology tools can help us collect data that allows us to make immediate changes in our instruction based on the individual needs of students.

In order to personalize the learning experience for students, we must know where they stand. Frequent, ongoing assessment, is therefore, an essential component of any personalized learning program.

Activity: Padlet Assessment Tool "Stations"

2. Find the tool that you signed up for on signup genius. You may have to scroll down to find your tool.

3. Follow the directions for your assessment tool. You will have approximately 25 minutes to explore your tool and answer the questions on the padlet board.

4. Be prepared to give a 1-3 minute overview of your assessment tool to the rest of the class.

Homework

1. Visit one of your classmates blogs and leave them a comment about their post from last week. (Click here to access a master list of blog addresses.)

2. Re-visit the Padlet board linked above. Read the information posted by your classmates for each tool.

3. Select one tool and design an assessment to use with your students before our next class session. (Note: You may pick any of the tools, you are not restricted to the one you researched in class.) - For administrators, pick a tool that you think could be used in your role, and create something that would be beneficial for you as an administrator.

4. Reflect on your experience and write a blog post that addresses the following questions.

a. Which assessment tool did you select, and why?

b. Tell us about your experience with creating the assessment and assigning it to your students. Did you have any challenges, "Ah Ha! Moments," etc.

c. Would you use this tool again/recommend it to others? Why or why not.

d. What are the pros and cons of this tool?

Due: February 9, 2015
